How AI 360 Surround View Improves Visibility for Refuse Trucks

Refuse trucks operate in crowded urban routes where visibility changes constantly. Curbside bins, parked cars, cyclists, pedestrians, narrow alleys and uneven road surfaces can make close-range maneuvering difficult.

During repeated low-speed stops, drivers need to judge side clearance, rear corners, wheel-area space and nearby obstacles while working close to curbs. An AI 360° surround view system gives sanitation vehicle drivers a unified bird’s-eye view around the truck, helping support curbside collection, narrow-lane driving and tight-space reversing.

How the AI 360° Surround View System Operates

This commercial vehicle 360° camera system adopts a multi-camera structure to realize all-round monitoring of the vehicle’s front, rear, left and right sides.

Four wide-angle cameras capture the full surroundings of the vehicle. All camera footage is sent to the central processing unit, which corrects lens distortion, aligns calibrated frames and stitches the footage into a simulated top-down bird’s-eye view.

The vehicle outline is displayed at the center of the monitor, with curbs, road edges, pedestrians, other vehicles and surrounding obstacles clearly presented to assist low-speed maneuvering. The system supports split-screen display: the panoramic overhead view can be shown simultaneously with independent front, rear, left or right camera feeds, so drivers can check both the full surrounding overview and a single directional view as required.

Auto Triggered Views

The system features automatic view switching that displays the most relevant camera image based on driving behavior:

  • Engaging reverse gear prioritizes the rear camera alongside the complete surround view;
  • Activating left or right turn signals brings up the matching side camera feed automatically.

This function is useful for vehicles operating in complex urban environments. Take refuse trucks as an example: during repeated curbside waste collection, narrow-lane travel, turning and tight-space reversing, drivers can reduce manual camera switching during stop-and-go work, helping simplify low-speed operation on crowded urban routes.

AI Detection Adds Warning Support

The system can support AI-assisted object detection and visual warning display, depending on configuration.

The AI function is designed to help detect selected pedestrians, vehicles and obstacles around the truck. When a target enters the configured detection area, visual warning boxes appear on the monitor to remind the driver of a potential surrounding risk.
